Ralph Yates, who had less than £5 to his name when he moved from Leeds to Malton in 1845, established Yatesonline. He set up the Derwent Foundry in Raionay Street, then known as Water Lane, and the Blacksmith and Foundry business quickly grew to include the production of agricultural machinery. In 1895, a warehouse was built to store the iron moulds needed at the foundry. Over the course of the 20th century, Yatesonline expanded and worked closely with the farming community, a major contributor to the local economy. By the early 1960s, the company had shifted its focus from manufacturing to retail.
