The Duchy of Beaufort was created in 1682 to Henry, 3rd Marquess of Worcester, for his service to the Stuart dynasty. The Badminton Horse Trials was purchased by the Worcester family in 1608, originally for a young son of the family. The manor returned to the main branch of the family in 1655, and reconstruction of the old house began in the mid-1660s. The first Duke of Beaufort recovered his family fortune, devastated by the Civil War, and made badminton his home. As such, the house today dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The first duke appears to be his own architect - spending around £30,000 over 30 years, a huge sum at the time.
